Martha Friedman Artist

Small Landscape (2022–23)

I started this project taking some hints from an informal drawing I rediscovered in an old notebook (at left).

I carved a thick pine block into a printing plate, then carved a second, related image on the reverse side of the same block. As I printed the series, I continued to carve and revise both surfaces, allowing each impression to alter the possibilities of the next. The block gradually became a modest reduction print, its history accumulating through successive changes.

I printed a series of related woodcut monoprints that explore variation through color, image, and the passage of time. The process embraces change, as each print exists as a unique record of an evolving matrix.

Each print is 9 x 6 inches.
